GU wakes up to lack of fire safety in 17 buildings

At last, Gujarat University has opened its eyes to the absence of fire safety in its campus. The state’s largest university was exempted from installing a fire safety system till now as its main building is not a high-rise. After a nudge from the fire department, GU has started the process to set up fire safety in its main building as well as 16 others. A tender for the same is in the process of being issued. As per the fire department guidelines, GU will put up fire extinguishers, fire alarms and signages in all the buildings before seeking fire NOC. The NOC will be issued post the inspection by the competent authorities. Surprisingly, GU officials till now did not bother to adopt fire safety. A few days ago, varsity officials visited the AMC and its fire department to hold discussions. A decision was made to first install fire safety equipment and then apply for NOC. The GU campus mainly comprises the main building besides three structures of the School of Languages, School of Commerce, School of Law, School of Psychology and 7-8 structures of the School of Science. Most of these buildings are 9 meter high while few are 9-12 meter high. Fire safety measures are mandatory for these buildings now and fire NOC will be issued after a review, officials said. Former Senate member of GU Dr Manish Doshi said, “There are 16 buildings in GU campus and thousands of students visit daily. But GU has not bothered about their safety and shown laxity in installing fire safety measures. It is condemnable that it took a nudge from the AMC for GU officials to wake out of their slumber.” Gujarat University’s in-charge estate officer Shailesh Goswami said, “A tender has been issued for installation of fire safety systems across the varsity. Only the Vice Chancellor will be able to tell you more.... Read more.
