New global advisory panel convenes for upcoming road safety report
Geneva - A new and diverse group of leading experts in safe mobility met for the first time today to chart a path for the creation of the next Global Status Report on Road Safety. The Global Status Report is the leading global source of data on road traffic deaths and road safety policies that is produced by the World Health Organization [WHO] every few years. The upcoming Global Status Report is set for release in 2023. It aims to monitor progress of the Decade of Action for Road Safety and the Sustainable Development Goals Target 3.6 of halving the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes by 2030. “This is the first Advisory Board for a Global Status Report on Road Safety in many years. It brings together distinguished leaders, experts and practitioners from governments, city authorities, international financial institutions, academia and civil society. We are delighted to have them all with us and are keen to build up a global network of all involved in making mobility safer,” said Maria Segui-Gomez, Coordinator of the Global Status Report at WHO. The full list of participants can be viewed here. The 2023 Global Status Report also aims to evaluate gaps in road safety at the national level to stimulate more action that saves lives, to generate more and better data to stimulate research, to assess the overall road safety situations in all United Nations Member States and to assess any changes since the publication of previous versions of the report. The last Global Status Report, released in December 2018, revealed that around 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes, that 93% of the world's fatalities on the roads occur in low-and middle-income countries, and that road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among children and young adults aged 5-29 years. ...
