Safety Harrison Smith ejected from Vikings game vs. Texans for leading with helmet

Safety Harrison Smith (above, far right) was ejected at the end of the second quarter of the Vikings' game in Houston on Sunday after a hit to Texans tight end Jordan Akins. Smith was flagged for lowering his helmet to initiate contact after he left his feet and made helmet-to-helmet contact with Akins, who was gathering himself after a 26-yard catch over the middle. For that hit to lead to an ejection, the game's referee, Brad Rogers, or the NFL's VP of Officiating Al Riveron in New York needed to deem Smith's actions as "flagrant." Flagrant is defined by the NFL as "extremely objectionable, conspicuous, unnecessary, avoidable, or gratuitous" and "does not necessarily imply malice on the part of the fouling player or an intention to injure an opponent." Akins suffered a concussion during the hit and has been ruled out for the Texans. This is Smith's second ejection of his nine-year NFL career, the first since he was a rookie in 2012 and made illegal contact with an official.Smith was also fined $10,026 in 2018 for a late hit on Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The Vikings defense turned to safety George Iloka to replace Smith. Iloka, the former Bengals veteran, re-signed with Minnesota on Sept. 17 and was elevated from the practice squad for a second game. With Anthony Harris and Iloka at safety, Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson threw a 24-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter against an apparent busted Vikings coverage. Minnesota's secondary was already without cornerbacks Mike Hughes (neck) and Kris Boyd (hamstring), and rookie cornerback Cameron Dantzler was shaken up and briefly left the game in the first quarter before returning....
